<p>Phishing is a criminal activity where scammers use the Internet to fraudulently lure people to reveal personal identity data and financial information. Scammers often send emails with links to fraudulent websites in an attempt to steal financial data. Here are three tips to spot a phony phishing website on the Internet.</p>
<ol>
<li>Check  URL</li>
</ol>
<p>A URL is the address for a website. Phishing scammers often misspell common words in a URL that appears legitimate to navigate users to a fraudulent webpage. For example, the url https://www.bankofamerica.com is a legitimate website. A scammer may eliminate the &#8220;i&#8221; in America and unsuspecting users may click on a link received in an email without noticing the missing letter.</p>
<p>2.  Check if &#8220;https://&#8221; is in the Address Bar</p>
<p>Banking and financial transaction websites use the secure encrypted &#8220;https://&#8221; instead of the unsecure &#8220;http://&#8221;. <a href="http://www.staysmartonline.gov.au/factsheets/factsheet_10" target="_blank">Phishing</a> scams that direct people to phony websites on the Internet are often not encrypted and use &#8220;http&#8221; instead of &#8220;https.&#8221;</p>
<p>3.  Check for Valid SSL Certificate</p>
<p>To verify if a website has a valid secure socket layer (SSL) certificate, in most web browsers you can right click on the webpage, click on properties or view page info, click on security if needed, then click on view certificates. Some banking websites may contain a lock icon at the bottom right of the page. You can verify that the icon is valid by clicking on it which will direct you to the security page. Phony websites often have fake lock icons that shows no information when you point your mouse on the icon or click on it.</p>

<p>In the 1980s computers were bulky and rather unstylish. The 90s is considered the dawn of the information age and laptop computers became the next big thing. Now in the new millennium, computers are smaller than ever before and tablet computers like the iPad are becoming increasingly popular. Here are some ways tablet computers are replacing the traditional PC.</p>
<ul>
<li>Gaming</li>
</ul>
<p>Gaming is currently the number one activity performed on tablet computers. In a March 2011 <a href="http://www.mequoda.com/articles/digital-magazine-publishing/tablets-diminish-pc-usage/">tablet survey</a> conducted by Google Admob, 84 percent of consumers use their tablet computer for gaming. With the explosion of apps, developers are constantly unleashing new games, such as the popular Angry Birds. With so many tablet gamers, playing games on a traditional PC is becoming outdated.</p>
<ul>
<li>Email Usage &amp; Web Browsing</li>
</ul>
<p>Emailing and web browsing currently holds the second and third spot respectively for tablet activity. The 2011 Google Admob survey revealed that 78 percent of consumers use their tablet for emailing and 74 percent use for surfing the Internet. The survey also revealed that personal PC usage declined 77 percent after purchasing a tablet computer.</p>
<ul>
<li>Home Usage</li>
</ul>
<p>More and more people are moving away from use of a desktop computer at home and are using their tablet instead. The Google Admob survey reported that 82 percent of consumers are using their tablets primarily at home. Another tablet study conducted by <a href="http://blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire/online_mobile/connected-devices-how-we-use-tablets-in-the-u-s/" target="_blank">Nielsen</a> reported that 51 percent of tablet owners use their device in bed. The top three reasons why people like using their tablet computers at home as reported by Nielsen includes, ease of carrying, ease of interface and fast start-up.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div class="zemanta-pixie" style="margin-top: 10px; height: 15px;"><a class="zemanta-pixie-a" title="Enhanced by Zemanta" href="http://www.zemanta.com/"><img class="zemanta-pixie-img" style="border: medium none; float: right;" src="http://img.zemanta.com/zemified_c.png?x-id=4b55b0cd-e381-4d59-9818-6ab4727000f4" alt="Enhanced by Zemanta" /></a></div>

<p>Social networking websites are continuously evolving the Internet into a global society where people can socialize and news can travel around the world instantly. Never before has personal information sharing been so easy and quick to perform. Here are some ways social networking is evolving the Internet.</p>
<ul>
<li>Friendship Communities</li>
</ul>
<p>Perhaps the most significant impact social media has had on the Internet is the ability to connect with friends, find out what they are doing at the moment, share videos and pictures. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook" target="_blank">Facebook</a> is currently the dominant player in the social networking industry with more than 600 million active users as of January 2011. Along with posting messages, pictures and videos, Facebook allow users to further build a community of friends where they can invite each other to games and see each other&#8217;s scores.</p>
<ul>
<li>Constant Celebrity Updates</li>
</ul>
<p>Before social media websites like Twitter, celebrity fanatics had to wait to get their get news from tabloid magazines and entertainment news shows. With the explosion of Twitter, subscribers can follow celebrities and get instant updates on their daily lives. Perhaps this means celebrities&#8217; having a private life is fading away, but for those who love to keep up with the &#8220;stars,&#8221; Twitter is a celebrity-update revolution.</p>
<ul>
<li>Worldwide Evangelism.</li>
</ul>
<p>Facebook has become a revolutionary evangelistic tool for countries involved in political uprising. Recently in February 2011, Egypt went through a massive protest to expel its government leader and Facebook was a major component of spreading the news. In an article from the <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/02/11/egypt-facebook-revolution-wael-ghonim_n_822078.html" target="_blank">The Huffington Post</a>, activist Wael Ghonim spoke with CNN in which he credited Facebook for the success of the Egyptian people uprising.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>With the Internet and today&#8217;s technology, there are many options when it comes to playing games. You can play games online or you can download games and play them on your computer.</p>
<h3>Advantages to Playing Games Online</h3>
<p>There are a few advantages to playing a game online. For one, when you play games online, including <a href="http://www.888ladies.com/skin/bingo-games/bingo.php">bingo games</a>, you don&#8217;t have to worry about installing the game on your hard drive. When you install a game, you have to worry about things such as whether you have a compatible operating system and whether you have room on your hard drive for the game&#8217;s file and information. Additionally, when there are updates, you have to go back to the game&#8217;s website and download these updates and install them.</p>
<p>Sometimes, when you install new programs, there are conflicts between the program files and other files on the computer which can lead to your computer not running efficiently. Also, you might have issues with certain programs slowing your computer down.</p>
<h3>Advantages to Playing Games on Your Computer</h3>
<p>The number one advantage to playing games on your computer is being able to play the game no matter what. There are many times, especially while traveling, when you may not have access to the Internet. When this happens you will still be able to play the game on your computer.</p>
<p>Another advantage with playing on your computer is you can save things such as high scores and game preferences, which you are not able to do online.</p>
<p>Overall, whether you play online or on your computer depends on which advantages are more beneficial to you and your circumstances.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In the early 1990s, only twenty years ago, the average household didn&#8217;t have a personal computer in it. Today, it seems the average household has a personal computer for every member of the family. America has gone from a society that uses computers lightly to a society that uses computers regularly. Many studies have been conducted and according to an article in the New York times kids spend 7.5 hours a day using some form of media. In that 7.5 hours they consume 11 hours of media because they take in media from different sources simultaneously. So, the question arises, whether you are a child or an adult, how much time on the computer is too much.</p>
<p>For many adults, their job takes place primarily on a computer. This means that the computer time for them starts off on a week day at 7 hours. In the study listed above we are talking about television, MP3 players, telephones, and computers. These activities can include anything from playing bingo games or researching information for work.  All of these things are not completely different in that you are spending your time relating to or through an electronic device rather than person to person, person to book, person to dog, and the list goes on and on. Some are of the opinion that this is too much, that this is having a negative effect on humanity. Others don&#8217;t want to hear it and are happy with there opportunity to spend his or her time as that individual sees fit.</p>
<p>The debate can rage and there are opinions that make sense on both sides, but for parents wondering how to make a decision to limit their child&#8217;s media use, a choice must be made. The important part of making this decision is first of all knowing your kids. If that is the problem and you think, all of the devices are to blame here is a suggestion. Rather than limiting the use of devices, find a way to get to know your kids, even by requiring family time spent engaged in an activity. The device is maybe not the enemy, spending time with your kids is the goal.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>On the surface, bingo appears to be simply a game of chance with no strategy or competitive element, but nothing could be further from the truth. Players who win big at online bingo know how to play well and how to get the fastest payout. If you want to increase your chances of winning at bingo here are a few suggestions to get you on the right track.</p>
<p>1) Purchase the right number of cards</p>
<p>Statistically, the more cards you have, the more likely you are to win; however, the more cards you have, the harder they are to keep track of. And one missed number can cost you the game. So make sure you only purchase the number of cards that you can concentrate on at one time.</p>
<p>2) Pay attention</p>
<p>This may seem like obvious advice, but there are many people who lose at bingo games simply because they aren’t paying attention. You may get a diagonal bingo without realizing, or you may simply miss a letter and number combination and lose your chance at a big pile of cash. If you have problems concentrating, it may be best to find an online bingo site that will automatically fill out your cards for you.</p>
<p>3) Always call</p>
<p>If you are unsure that you have a bingo, call it anyway. If you are wrong, nothing changes. But if you are right — and don’t call — you will have missed your chance to win.</p>
<p>Bingo is more than a game of chance, it takes concentration and focus to win big. You can take that advice all the way to the bank.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Online gambling might seem all fun and games, but if you are not a vigilant Internet user, it could lead you to fall prey to an Internet scam. While most online gambling sites are legitimate and scam-free, there are some that are designed to scam people out of their money or steal their personal information.</p>
<p>Here is a look at some ways you can enjoy your online casino or <a href="http://www.casinoreview.org/" target="_blank">sports betting sites</a> and not fall victim to potential scams.</p>
<h3>Avoid Giving Personal Information</h3>
<p>Many online gambling sites will not need to know your social security number, cell phone number, address, and mother’s maiden name. If an online gambling website is asking for this type of information up front, it has the potential to be an Internet scam.</p>
<h3>Secure Internet Connection</h3>
<p>Many <a href="http://ezinearticles.com/?Preventing-Gambling-Scams---How-To-Avoid-Internet-Gambling-Scams-Before-They-Occur&amp;id=1658521" target="_blank">malicious gambling sites</a> don’t ask for personal information but will plant malicious programs, such as malware or viruses, onto your computer. These programs can destroy your computer or steal your information without you knowing it. A secure Internet connection will help prevent the installation of any malicious computer programs onto your computer.</p>
<h3>Don’t Loan Money</h3>
<p>Avoid loaning any money, whether it is cash or credit card numbers, to people you meet in online casino rooms. Chances are you will never be repaid the money you lent out.</p>
<p>You can also <a href="http://www.ehow.com/how_2142494_avoid-online-gambling-scams.html" target="_blank">avoid online gambling scams</a> by playing on reputable sites like BetUS.Com or Intertops. You can tell a reputable sites by reading other players&#8217; reviews online or by making sure it is recommended by other online casino review blogs/websites.</p>

<p>The job market is more competitive today than it has ever been before. Job search strategies are evolving from the traditional method of posting resumes on job search websites to using social media websites that has revolutionized the Internet industry. Here are some tips to optimize your Internet job search using social media.</p>
<ul>
<li>Create a Professional Profile on Social Media Websites</li>
</ul>
<p><a href="http://aneliteresume.com/career-management/employers-and-recruiters-using-social-media/">Recent surveys</a> in 2010 showed that 92 percent of employers are searching for candidates using social media websites like LinkedIn. LinkedIn is a website that&#8217;s geared towards professionals connecting. A great benefit of LinkedIn is getting recommendations from your contacts for your work history. This will help boost your credibility with employers. You can also create a professional profile on other social websites like Facebook and Twitter.</p>
<ul>
<li>Visit Employers Social Media Page</li>
</ul>
<p>Most companies nowadays have a <a href="http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs/outside-voices-careers/2011/03/30/7-ways-to-use-facebook-for-your-job-search?s_cid=rss:outside-voices-careers:7-ways-to-use-facebook-for-your-job-search">Facebook</a>, Twitter or YouTube page. The next time you visit a potential employers website, check to see if they have links to their social media pages. Or you can simply do a search for the company you&#8217;re interested in directly on those social websites. Utilizing a potential employers social page will allow you to network with employees and clients. This can get you a step closer to the hiring manager for your desired position.</p>
<ul>
<li>Subscribe to Employers RSS Feeds</li>
</ul>
<p>RSS stands for really simple syndication. Companies use RSS feeds to release up-to-date information about business ventures, products or services. Subscribing to an employer&#8217;s RSS press feed will not only keep you informed but you can use this knowledge to your advantage when writing your cover letter and on interviews.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Sometimes in life, you just have to borrow some money to get you through to your next regular paycheck. While this is unfortunate, you cannot always help the curve balls that life is going to throw your way. When you take out a <a href="http://ezinearticles.com/?Online-Payday-Loans-Come-With-Many-Benefits&amp;id=4423164" target="_blank">payday loan</a>, it can be a stressful process, and it can even be an insecure one if the company does not run a tight ship. Fortunately, there are many options available that can help you keep the process simple, secure and speedy.</p>
<p>For starters, look online for fax-less lenders. For one thing, many people no longer have fax machines because they no longer have landline telephones. For another thing, fax machines do not send your information (such as your bank statements and identification) in a non-secure way, so anybody could intercept it and use it against you later. But being fax less is not the only benefit of working with an online lender. It is also a whole lot faster and easier to deal with them than it is to stand in a line at a brick-and-mortar shop.</p>
<p>Using an online company also prevents other mishaps. When you are physically carrying your information, it can always fall away and go unnoticed&#8230;except to an identity thief. As far as the waiting in line thing goes, you are also going to save yourself a lot of time if you just don&#8217;t do it. Don&#8217;t you have better things to do than hang out waiting in a line somewhere?</p>
<p>With a company like <a href="http://www.paydayone.com/" target="_blank">PayDay One</a>, you can sit in the comfort of your own home and get your application filled out, filed and approved. The lender will direct deposit the funds within the specified time frame. This is a whole lot easier than being handed a big wad of cash, and it can let you pay bills faster.</p>
<p>The Internet makes borrowing emergency cash easy and secure. It may be just what you need.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There are many benefits of learning online, and many busy people find that this type of education works best for them. Sites like earnmydegree.com can show you all of the online options that are available, and many of them surprise people. In fact, online learning offers some of the highest quality education that is offered today, with some online school receiving higher accreditation than many brick and mortar schools.</p>
<p>Why Online Works For People</p>
<p>Online education offers people the luxury setting their own schedules, having the <a href="http://distancelearn.about.com/od/distancelearning101/tp/10-Reasons-to-Choose-Online-Education.htm">flexibility</a> with completing classes, in some case as long as six months, and the option to work completely independently, or with a team environment. The other major benefits that online education offers are the saving of a regular tuition. Because online schooling is low cost on the facilities, and professors are hired as adjuncts, there is little to no overhead for many of the high quality schools. This is also true of schools that are outsourcing as a satellite institution.</p>
<p>Online degrees are becoming high demand options because businesses are utilizing the convenience for the purpose of continuing education for their employees. The affordability and flexibility makes this a winning choice. Showing that you already have an online degree is a great way to make yourself appealing and valuable to a company that is striving to get their employees ready for the technological age that business is so geared for. Online degrees also show a savvy for technology that is already present, showing companies that you are ready to jump in.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you buy a laptop these days chances are it comes with a webcam attached to your computer just above your monitor. If you purchase a PC you may or may not have this feature come with your purchase. So what kind of device do you need?</p>
<p>If you intend to use the camera as nothing more than a webcam than the resolution of the camera doesn&#8217;t have to be extensive. There is a limit to the resolution that will be seen most computer screens so a the top of the line high mega-pixel camera may be more than your system can use. So, be reasonable with your purchase.</p>
<p>If you intend to use your camera for online calls through something like Skype, you will also need a microphone. Some cameras come with a microphone in the same unit. A word of caution, if you have difficulty hearing and need to turn your speakers up loud to hear the other caller the microphone may pick up the sound of the speaker causing some audio issues in the call. In this case it is better to purchase headphones with a microphone as apposed to getting the microphone on board with the camera.</p>
<p>Some digital cameras can also double as a webcam. It is probably best to divide these two uses of cameras to different devices as you will need very different qualities in each camera. It&#8217;s important to know exactly what you want to use the camera for before you purchase it. This will help you make the best decision when you are in the store or searching online.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Computers have become a real necessity for business and for personal use. <a href="http://www.ehow.com/how_3038_buy-computer.html">Choosing the right computer</a> is not as simple as you might think. There is a lot to consider such as how much RAM you need, what software programs you will want and what kind of access you require to the Internet. You will need to think about whether you require sound on the computer and what that means to you.</p>
<p>Taking time to really assess your budget and needs will go a long way to attaining the goals you have set in your computer needs. Do you need the computer to let you play in Online Casino games or the newest computer games? You will find that it is much easier to walk into a computer store knowing this information and finding just what you want. You will not have to work so hard to get exactly what you need. You will also want to discuss with the representative what you can expect as far as needing upgrades in the future. You want to be sure you are not put in the situation of needing a new computer or buying new software six months later.</p>
<p>If you require sound, you would need a soundcard installed as well as speakers on your computer. It is important that before your start your adventure in computer <a href="http://sbinfocanada.about.com/cs/beforeyoubuy/bb/notebook.htm">shopping</a> that you take some time to assess your needs. If you are not sure what you need in components and software on your computer, at least knowing all of the things you are going to use the computer for will help the sales representative to find the right computer for you.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The development of the internet has lead to a greater availability of information for all that have access to it. Only ten or fifteen years ago most contact needed to be made in person, on the telephone or through mail. The fax machine was also available but was limited, generally to businesses.</p>
<p>To find information such as a personal credit report took days or more to get back. Today, something like a credit report can be retrieved for free on the internet. Even today a credit report requested on the internet can give you immediate information while a request via phone or mail will take fifteen days.</p>
<p>To get your free credit report simple go to www.annualcreditreport.com. At that site, first select your state and push the button &#8220;request report&#8221;. Follow the instructions and within a short time after verification of your identity you will be able to view your credit report.</p>
<p>This is only one example of the accessibility of information because of the internet. In addition banking has never been more accessible. Not only checking balances and making transfers but also paying bills directly from your account. Even taxes can be done online, with a much shorter wait for your refund, if one is available to you. To file your taxes online all one needs to do is visit the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website and look for the link to free filing. Without the internet most of the transactions listed here will take a day to months to have competed. The availability of the internet has changed that.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Have you ever visited a casino? Casino’s feature all around the world, allowing people to enter and enjoy a luxurious life which is designed to be as far away from normal life as possible. The decor is lavish, the statues are detailed and the lights are dimmed and there’s an atmosphere of complete glamour.</p>
<p>There are no windows or clocks, so time is lost, and swapping cash for casino chips feels oh-so-exciting and that’s before you see the wide range of games you can join in or watch. From poker to blackjack, there are <a href="http://www.casino.com/" target="_blank">online casino games</a> everyone will love. And once you’ve had your fill of gaming, casinos often offer food and drinks, and even entertainment such as performances and shows.</p>
<p>There is a way to experience the excitement if you don’t have the time or money to jet off to a Casino, though. Online casinos have been growing in popularity, and it’s not hard to see why. They often offer free money for new accounts, and you can log in and play whenever you want. There are always several games on the go, so you don’t have to wait to start playing, and you can play for as long as you want.</p>
<p>You can also clearly see how much you’ve spent. While casino chips might be part of the experience, they do help you to forget how much you are actually spending, and might make you place larger bets then you would with actual cash. Online casinos ask you to deposit money from your bank account, and your balance is clearly displayed. Once you’ve run out, you can go through the deposit process to add more funds, but you can’t spend more then you’ve deposited.</p>
<p>The two types of casino are really incomparable. The real casino gives you an experience unlike any other, where everyone is treated like royalty, whereas online is easily accessible, fun, and affordable. <a href="http://www.ehow.com/about_5427429_online-games-vs-real-casino.html" target="_blank">Which is your favorite?</a></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Have you heard of open source software? Open source is an option that includes free use for anyone who wants it. Free use does not only include that the end user can access the software and use it for free. It means that the code which makes up the software should also always be free to use to everyone. In no way can the software in whole or in part be sold. It is meant to maintain availability to all.</p>
<p>This is important because there should always be an alternative to the software that is being marketed and can not be molded to meet your needs but must be used as it is. Any changes to the software requires contact with the company that made the software.</p>
<p>Today, anyone can download an office suite for free. OpenOffice includes a word processor, spreadsheet, database, presentation program and more. Most of the functions you find from Microsoft Office. If you have used some of the standard office programs that are all similar, then you will be able to easily start using OpenOffice. Upon opening the word processor you will see the similarities to the other programs and although the look is slightly different the logic of where the functions are is similar. You may even find some tools you wish you had when you used other office suites in the past.</p>
<p>Just because the software was developed to be used by the end user for free does not in and of itself make it inferior. The word processor functions how you need a word processor to function. And no there are no advertisements for you to look at the whole time you use it.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div>It’s hard to separate fact from fiction in advertising, and certainly no less so when dealing with web hosting providers. Bold, broad-sweeping claims are endlessly repeated in a shameless effort to keep you from reading the fine print. In an age where it seems there are almost as many web hosting providers as there are websites to be hosted, competition is fierce, and competing web hosting providers will say almost anything to get you to sign up with them.</div>
<p>That’s why you need to know what to look for, how to read between the lines, so that you don’t fall victim to any of the most common scams that plague the internet in the guise of once-in-a-lifetime offers you absolutely can’t refuse.</p>
<p>Free Web Space: Yes, some web hosting providers will give you 5 or 10 MB of web space for no charge, however (and we know you’ve heard this phrase before…) certain restrictions apply. Make sure you know what they are.</p>
<p>Unlimited Bandwidth: There’s no such thing, plain and simple. The web hosting providers themselves have limitations imposed on their bandwidth; how can they offer you any more than that?  They can’t.</p>
<p>When web hosting providers offer “unlimited” bandwidth it means they’ve estimated how much usage their average customer could ever possibly need, thereby giving the illusion of unlimited bandwidth.</p>
<p>Free Domain Names: Sure, they’re free, but so’s dirt. You want some free dirt?  We didn’t think so. Free domain names are about as valuable. First of all, they look something like this:</p>
<p>www. webhostingprovidersname.com/user/usersname.html (or some equally excruciating variation thereof).</p>
<p>Now, consider this:</p>
<p>First, most internet surfers are wise to these types of URLs; people know that companies with domain names like these are not usually the most well-established or reputable businesses online.</p>
<p>Second, the more slashes your URL contains, the lower your page rank.</p>
<p>And third, no one will remember the name of your website!</p>
<p>These are just a few of the reasons why free domain names aren’t all they’re cracked up to be.</p>
<p>Domain Registration: Now, this by itself is no scam; to the contrary, it’s a useful and convenient feature many web hosting providers offer. Some, however, will actually register your domain in their name. This way, they locked you into service with them as switching web hosting providers now means losing your domain name.</p>
<p>Web Templates: Don’t mistake us, web templates are great. How else can the average computer user whip out a website that looks halfway decent without spending a fortune?  But what web hosting providers don’t tell you about these templates could end up costing you later.</p>
<p>Any images or page designs or web forms or any other objects that originated from your web hosting providers database belongs to them. They own the copyright. If you ever switch web hosting providers, you can’t take any of it with you.</p>
<p>Not to mention, if you ever decide to hire a professional webmaster, many will refuse to work with template-driven websites, as they’re (ironically) harder to manage.</p>
<p>No Contact Information: If you can’t find on their website at least one way – email address, query ticket, phone number, mailing address – to get in touch with the web hosting providers you’re considering, stop considering them.</p>
<p>Discounts for Long Term Contracts: Before falling prey to this alluring gimmick, ask yourself, even if your website lasts as long as your contract, are you sure your web host will?  Web hosting providers (like websites) are born and die every day, and they know it. That’s why most of them include somewhere in their Terms of Service that they won’t be held liable if they can’t fulfill their end of the contract.</p>
<p>So, if they go under, so does your website. And if you go under first, say goodbye to the money you paid for the long term contract. Either way, it’s no bargain. Stick with a year or two at most.</p>
<p>No Guarantees: Whether for web hosting providers or wetsuit manufacturers or weight loss programs, they’ve got to have a money-back guarantee. These days, it’s essential. And there’s zero reason you should ever pay for a product or service that doesn’t offer some form of money back guarantee or another. Really, now.</p>
<p>So it is much more better that you visit a hosting reviews website and read their web hosting reviews and go for a paid webhosting .</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Are you looking for a second portable computer for use around the house and while traveling? There are number of options out there that may fit exactly what you need. Consider trying out a net-book for your next computer.</p>
<p>Today, there is less need for all the extras when all you want out of your PC is the ability to go online or type a document. Even the small netbooks have all the ports to connect to the internet and some external devices. Anything you will need. Most programs you would want can be downloaded from the internet so the lack of CD or DVD-ROM drive is not a problem.</p>
<p>The screen size on most netbooks is much smaller than those on an average sized laptop. This can be difficult to get used to for some people because most websites are sized for a different size screen. More scrolling may be required than you are used to when you use an 11 inch or larger monitor. What this means is that a net-book may not be the best choice for someone that has difficulty seeing and requires larger icons and text when viewing.</p>
<p>The size of the keyboard is also often reduced in size for a net-book. Often the size is 95% or 90% of a regular keyboard. This could be nice for a child or someone with small hands, but may be a problem for someone with larger hands.</p>
<p>All of this is of little importance if you intend to use the device for limited use or while traveling. the compromise might be worth it for the highly portable device and the low cost. And the run Windows operating systems.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Many people today are looking into affiliate marketing as a way to make some extra money. Unfortunately, many of these people are making some big mistakes that are easily avoided. When starting with an affiliate marketing company, don&#8217;t get caught in these traps.</p>
<p>1) There is no instant gratification. Many people think that affiliate marketing will get them money fast. This is not true. Anything worth doing is worth doing well, and it will take time. Though you may be able to get your blog up quickly and add an affiliate product to the blog right away, this does not mean that you will be bringing in hundreds of dollars right away. In fact, you may find that you don&#8217;t make anything at all for a while.</p>
<p>2) Do your research! One of the biggest problems that those who get into affiliate marketing have is that they don&#8217;t do their research. Look at an <a href="http://www.aceaffiliates.com/">affiliate review</a> before you choose a program to work with. A company may sound perfect on first glance, but you may find that isn&#8217;t exactly what you thought. Sometimes a company won&#8217;t pay as often as you would like. There are many things that may come to light once you do your research.</p>
<p>3) Stay in your <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecommerce">niche</a>. Your blog has a topic. This is your niche. For example, if you are writing about outdoor activities, you will want to work with an affiliate program that has to do with outdoor products. In this case, joining an affiliate program that promotes dolls would confuse your readers. Keep all of your marketing on topic to keep your readers interested and clicking on your affiliate links.</p>
<p>Affiliate marketing is a growing business model, and it is one that almost anyone can do. Doing it well requires staying away from the common mistakes that people make.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There are a number of ways to make money on the internet and you don&#8217;t even have to own a server to do it. Many people dream of working from home and many people actually do it. The internet has made it a reasonable choice to at least make extra money right from your own home. Here is a list of possible ways you too could do this.</p>
<ol>
<li>Writing: There are all sorts of websites and content needed to add to the internet. There are companies that you can work with that provide this content to other companies and individual websites that are looking to continuously add to the information they provide. In addition to online writing there are many publications looking to hire writers and all you have to do is get out and market your skills.</li>
<li>Store front: It is fairly easy to set up a store front website and start to sell whatever it is that you do on the internet. Are you a jewelry maker or do you make birdhouses. There are markets waiting for you to sell whatever you do. In order to get started you may first organize your business from home and then get it set up on the internet.</li>
<li>You can also make money from advertisers on the internet. If you start a website and start generating traffic you may add advertisements to your website. Many advertisers will give you a certain amount of money for every hit that you generate. Although this only makes a small amount of money, fractions of a cent, it can add up if you generate a large amount of traffic on your website.</li>
</ol>
<p>There are many ways to generate income online. Find something you like and market it, it can be easy and enjoyable.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>These days, for most people there are a number of options for connecting to the internet. The cost for this varies and so does the speed, but depending on what you want to use your internet connection for you may not need to have all the speed in the world. So how do I get connected to the internet and what connection type should I use.</p>
<p>First of all if you have an older computer with a slower processor, it may be that a super fast internet connection is wasted on the computer that you have. In other words, don&#8217;t get a cable connection if your computer isn&#8217;t going to get any benefit from having it.</p>
<p>There are a number of options and even within those options there are different prices for different speeds of connections. So first, you obviously need a computer. Your computer should have a phone port and/or a network cable port. Next you need service. So, there are some connections that still offer service through a telephone connection but these are incredibly slow, so most likely you will use one of the other type connections.</p>
<p>A DSL connection often offered along with your phone service by your phone company offers a faster service. This service is often packaged along with your phone service and rates are charged on a per month basis. A DSL connection is fast enough for most people for most things but if you plan to watch TV or other large video files you may want a faster connection speed.</p>
<p>Cable companies also offer internet connection along with satellite TV connections. The cable company connections are usually the fastest available. For a home network with multiple users and a variety of media being transmitted makes the cable connection enticing. Whatever you choose be sure to find antivirus software to install as well.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In the 1990s the number of websites that existed were a fraction of what they are today. Making a living online was not a widespread activity. Today, because of the spread of the internet, people use their computers in ways many of us never really imagined.</p>
<p>In the 1990s most of us used the internet for email, browsing the web, chatting, playing some video games, mostly just messing around. That is a generalization, but it is meant to be a description of the average user. The internet was an interesting new way to communicate but for many people it was not their primary way of communicating or getting information.</p>
<p>Today we find that the internet, for some people is the only way they get information. Gone is the television news caste from a TV at least and now, news is digested from the internet. Newspapers are read online if at all and the weather comes from Weather Underground instead of the local 6 o&#8217;clock forecast. People spend their time on Facebook, passing hours maintaining social networks. Even the telephone for some is entirely online. It is amazing how we have changed our internet use. One of the biggest changes of all is the number of people that are able to do their job from home. It is a new world where a person has access to everything they have in the office, when they are sitting at the dining room table in their home, or at a coffee shop.</p>
<p>The versatility of the internet has changed things for many people. Some people even make their entire living because the internet exists. What would people be doing today if not for the internet? Would society have advanced in different ways? Irrelevant questions really, the internet is here.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>How many times have you tried to play a media file only to find that you lack the software to play it. You try it in Windows Media Player and all you see is a file name in red that won&#8217;t play. No other players seem to make the file play. It is important that if you choose to use a computer that it can actually communicate to you the information that you are interested in seeing. So what options do you have and how can you gain access to the file you want to see?</p>
<p>The first important task is to copy the file you wish to play onto your computer. Sometimes the file you want to see is possible to play on existing software but your disc player may not be fast enough along with your processor to play the file. So, copy the file to your desktop and see if that allows you to play the file on an existing media player.</p>
<p>If you are still in a bind there is an option of downloading a new player to play your media. One suggestion is to download a player that is meant to play a variety of files. The VideoLan VLC media player is easily downloaded and plays many of the files you may have trouble playing. The VLC player is also open source software meaning it is free and maintained by a group of computer users. The player will play most media files whether it is a DVD or a Quicktime file. The player is meant to play as many variety of files as possible.</p>
<p>If these suggestinos don&#8217;t help consider doing a search. Look at the file extension of the file you would like to play and see what information is available. Hopefully the file you are trying to play are not corrupt. Good Luck.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Your computer is not just supposed to be a working machine. You can do a lot more on your computer if you want to, such as playing games and watching videos. However, if you wish to watch movies in High Definition or in other formats, you would need to ensure that you have appropriate software installed on your computer. One of the best software in this regard is VLC player. The VLC player is relatively small in size as compared to other <a href="http://vlc-download.com/">video</a> media players, and it has a highly improved compatibility system that allows it to run a variety of different video media formats.</p>
<p>With the introduction of the VLC player, a great many people have been spared the pain that they underwent whenever they wanted to play a movie format that was incompatible with their players. In order to play them, people had to look for codecs, and once they found the appropriate ones, install them on their computer. Even after installing, some of the codecs didn’t work properly, making it difficult for the people to understand what the root of the problem was.</p>
<p>However, VLC player now allows you to turn your computer in a movie screen and make it extremely easy to do so as well. The software has a very small size, and it allows you to play movies effortlessly without any issue at all. The best part about this software is &#8211; that it can be downloaded for free and you don’t have to pay any extra.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For some it is hard to believe that someone doesn&#8217;t have a computer. For others it is either they figure they won&#8217;t be able to figure out how to use the device or they just plain don&#8217;t realize what they could get from having a computer in the house. If you are one of the later people, this information may help you determine if you should get a computer.</p>
<p>Probably, the most important reason for most computer users is that they use the computer to stay in touch with friends and relatives. Yes, this means a connection to the internet. With a computer and a connection to the internet an entire world of communication will open up for you. It will allow you to use email services and the social networking sites that are growing in popularity. It will allow you to use internet phones, some of which such as Skype offer transmission of both audio and video. The phone of the future where you can see and hear the person you are communicating with. And with email you can send a letter in an instant. The internet will give you access to a countless number of resources that you can&#8217;t find anywhere else. As libraries start to get smaller, the reason is that the information is available on line, all day long.</p>
<p>In addition to the internet there are great opportunites for typing documents and storing photos. With today&#8217;s word processors there is spellcheck, grammar check and so on. There are great advantages to formating your document on a computer. Since so many photos are taken digitally today, if you don&#8217;t have a computer you won&#8217;t see them. It is easy to share photos when you can give easy and free access to your photos to everyone.</p>
<p>These are just a few of the reasons a computer should be in every home. If you are going to stay connected with younger generations a computer is probably necessary.</p>

<p>The Internet has made an indelible impact on the world we now live in. Where at one point you had to research things by going to a library, you can now simply go to a search engine and look up any topic that you want to know more about. Whether in our personal lives or in business, the fact is that the Internet has given us all a very large box of tools that we can use to advance any cause we choose to put our energy into.</p>
<p>Business has been especially advanced by the presence and power of the Internet. A business owner can use <a href="http://www.kissinsights.com/" target="_blank">free online surveys</a> to figure out what her customers really want, for instance. And through a simple search, that same business owner can figure out what sorts of words and phrases they should be using if they want to attract more customers to their website. Also, simply knowing what not to do can be very helpful to a business owner as they can make changes a lot quicker. Also, any business can reach literally hundreds of millions of people through the use of social networking websites. They can niche down their offerings to a specific type of person who is highly likely to buy, and still have a large pool of people that they can reach.</p>
<p>Of course, business is not the only part of human life that has been positively affected by the existence and prevalence of the Internet. Consider the realm of online music downloading and the frequency with which people do so. But when you can find nearly any kinds of audio and video you want on sites like YouTube and Hulu, who needs to download anything at all? One day, we may go back to not needing hard drives, because everything may be online.</p>
<div class="zemanta-pixie" style="margin-top: 10px; height: 15px;"><img class="zemanta-pixie-img" style="border: medium none; float: right;" src="http://img.zemanta.com/pixy.gif?x-id=3870bc2b-338b-45f2-bb92-7266a6f50790" alt="" /></div>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Many people want to take their computer where ever they go. It is important to them to have access to their files, yet they don&#8217;t want to carry the big laptop all the time. For other people they don&#8217;t want to have several different computers, they don&#8217;t want to carry around or pay for a smart phone and people want a solution. Here are a couple of solutions for people today.</p>
<p>One solution is to have a couple of computers. For some this is not ideal but this could work out. For instance you may own a desktop or higher end laptop along with a iPad or some similar unit. This will give you versatility both in and out of the home. The iPad can go where ever you go and the other computer can generally stay in the house.</p>
<p>A second option is to get a small notebook or net book and have other peripherals available for use when you are home. For instance these computers often do not have drives and large monitors allowing the computer to be more compact and fit easily into your bag or even a purse. When you are home the device can be plugged into a keyboard, mouse, monitor, disc drive if you need and any other peripheral you may find you need. This scenario will work best for people that use their computer more recreationally or for general communication purposes. For those that use their computer for business, the best choice may be to have separate computers. One computer for your work and one for your personal use. By dividing these uses you are able to use the proper tool for the proper job.</p>
<p>The market today, has computers of all shapes and sizes. If you determine what you need, chances are it is available. It doesn&#8217;t mean that you will be able to afford it, but check around, there are many alternatives and often many sales.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Getting better known online is a matter of getting your brand name known and getting links to your website. The more links you have, the better your website&#8217;s search engine ranking will be. Every Web business is determined to get great rankings, making them increasingly determined to get more links. This makes it important for your business to attract those links with content that is as interesting or informative as possible. The best ways to do that has changed over time as new and effective online marketing trends become clear. One of the ways that companies are creating their own high-powered marketing is to create their own Internet radio content.</p>
<p><a title="Information about DrJays clothing" href="http://www.sojones.com/hiphop-clothing/drjays-hip-hop-clothing-store-and-drjays-com/" target="_self">DrJays</a> is a website that has long used an Internet radio show to build an online audience. The site uses a radio show hosted by a journalist named Boss Lady to keep customers coming back again and again for new shows. Boss Lady interviews the hottest artists in the hip hop world, appealing to the same fan base that buys the clothing sold by Dr. Jays. Keeping the subject matter close to the item being sold, in the case of Dr. Jays,is the key to getting the right demographic to listen to the show and get interested in the products. A hip hop radio show attracts the demographic that also is interested in Dr. Jays clothing line. Internet radio can be used by websites of every type in order to create a loyal following and to spread the word about what the site sells.</p>
<p>To keep the customers coming back, there are other techniques that website owners can employ. Keeping a topical blog is a way of getting regular readers. Because it is frequently updated, just like an Internet radio show, it encourages repeat visitors. With repeat visitors comes waves of returning customers and an expanded branding that keeping expanding across the Internet to find new buyers.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Are you finding it hard to find what you are researching on the internet? There are simple ways you can find what you are looking for while limiting the hassles. Are you tired of being bombarded with adds? Do you find yourself looking at images of stuff you don&#8217;t want to look at? Here are a few simple ideas to get to what you want.</p>
<p>If you have no idea where there is information on what you want, this is when you use a search engine like Google or Yahoo. In order to get the best out of your search it is best to use specific terms of what you are looking for. If you have a specific name or phrase that you want put it in quotes so the search engine knows to only look for locations where those words show up together. For instance I want to search for Robin Williams. Put his name in quotation marks like this: &#8220;Robin Williams&#8221; in the box on the search page. The websites that show up will be sites that relate to that entire name, rather than the possibility of pages that just have the word robin or Williams. It is also important when searching to include as much specific terms that you can for your search. When in doubt about what to write you can write an entire question into the search page. Here is an example: What is the length of the longest snake? Although this may or may not get you what you want, refine your terms and do another search if you have to, in order to find what you are looking for at that time.</p>
<p>If you find that when you search you get too many explicit sites there is a simple. A variety of search engine such as Google, will allow you to set a &#8220;Safe Search Filter&#8221;. This setting will allow you to filter images or images and text. If you are not concerned with this you can turn it off as well.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>From the start, the prime focus of computers has been functionality. How can a machine help speed up the process of counting and calculating? When you think about computers today, you may think of the noble powers of equating and word processing, but what about games?</p>
<p>The first digital computer game, Spacewar!, originated in the minds of Steve Russell, Wayne Wiitanen and Martin Graetz in 1961 and was put into effect on the PDP-1 computer at MIT the following year. Spacewar! wasn&#8217;t created and then forgot about, though. Not only was the game wildly popular in the years surrounding its creation, it was in a continual state of development and re-programming and is played to this day.</p>
<p>The game is undoubtedly simple, but its details foreshadow the computer games of the present. The basics include the following aspects:<br />
There are two players, each controlling a spaceship, going head to head trying to blast away the other<br />
Each player uses a controller (later a joystick) that easily plugged into the PDP-1<br />
While shooting at each other, players have to fight shy of the star in the center of the game<br />
There are limited supplies of missiles and fuel<br />
Players could rotate both clockwise and counter-clockwise</p>
<p>It took 200 hours of computing and programming to develop Spacewar!, and it didn&#8217;t even end up being profitable. However, the game was successfully used in demonstration to aid in selling the PDP-1 model. Although Spacewar! is typically known as the first computer game, an earlier game called OXO created in 1952 may actually hold the title. The difference between the two is OXO is analog and Spacewar! was the first digital computer game. Either way, it&#8217;s hard to say if Steve Russell and his team knew what they were getting the world into when those first spaceship missiles flew.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When you think about computers, you don&#8217;t think of tactile pieces of wood beads sliding on a wire. But that&#8217;s exactly what an abacus is, and many consider the abacus to be the first computer. Usually relegated to early education classes and museums today, the abacus was history&#8217;s first known calculating device that wasn&#8217;t one&#8217;s own hands.</p>
<p>The inventor of the abacus and the exact date of invention are unknown, but many scholars believe it first showed up in Mesopotamia around 2700 B.C. Others suggest that 5000 B.C. is more accurate and posit it was the Chinese who first used the abacus. It is difficult to determine an exact date and civilization because the abacus is so prevalent in nearly every ancient society.</p>
<p>Although each country&#8217;s abacus differs slightly, many of the basics remain the same, and all were used for tallying amounts. In the construction of the abacus, a number of counters, usually beads made of wood or metal, are made movable on a plate or table. Within that table, there are rows of those counters in parallel lines, the total of which depended on the civilization from where it blossomed.</p>
<p>Addition and subtraction were the easiest functions to perform, but multiplication and division (as well as forms of algebra and other advanced mathematics) were possible. Calculating inventories and documenting finances became much easier with the use of the abacus. It served as a way to store information and keep track of figures during computation and, importantly, was portable in many instances. The abacus does not perform the computations, but allows people to execute notations more quickly.</p>
<p>So how is an abacus a computer? Well, it is and it isn&#8217;t. But in the most basic sense of computing, an abacus stores information and allows for faster calculations, which is what the earliest modern computers were capable of doing electronically.</p>

<p>When you try to conjure up an image of a computer nicknamed “bullnose” and “breadbox,” you don&#8217;t exactly come up with something beautiful and appealing. So, with that in mind, would you believe that this “breadbox” was the most successful single computer model ever? Would you believe that it has sold more than 17 million units and nearly everyone wanted one back when they were $595 a pop?</p>
<p>The year was 1982 and the computer was the Commodore 64. The predecessors of the C64 (as it was commonly know) looked nearly identical but had much less computing power. Some of C64’s features included the following:</p>
<p>— 8-bit processor<br />
— 64 kilobytes of memory (compared to the 5 kilobytes of the Commodore VIC-20)<br />
— Sound and graphics superior to other computers<br />
— Could be plugged directly into the TV (this allowed it to rival video game systems)<br />
— BASIC 2.0 programming language</p>
<p>The C64’s plethora of features certainly gave it an edge over much of the competition, but there is more to its success than its properties alone. The marketing of the Commodore 64 was brilliant. In addition to being sold at electronics stores like other computer models, the C64 was sold in department and toy stores as well. This was due to its versatility as a video game console and its ability to be easily plugged into the TV.</p>
<p>Because of its amazing graphics and sound, the Commodore 64 was one of the first computers used less for the traditional functions of computing and processing and more for gaming software. One of the C64’s major competitors, Atari, was flabbergasted by the C64’s capabilities and price. The other competitor, the Apple II, had a higher resolution but was a poorer quality and less usable than the C64.</p>
<p>The Commodore 64 changed the industry and was major step forward in computing power, spawning creations aplenty from there forward.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Since 1927, Time magazine has named a Man of the Year. They haven’t always been men. In 1952, Queen Elizabeth II was given the honor. And they haven’t always been just one person, either. In 1966, an entire generation was named Man of the Year. But 1982 marked the first time a nonhuman was given the title. The winner? The computer. This moment signaled a shift of awareness that was occurring in America. People began to realize the computer was quickly going to become a mainstay of the modern world.</p>
<p>Although the article itself was allegedly (and ironically) written on a typewriter, Time was correct in its pronouncement that the popularity of and the passion for the computer was going to continue to snowball. The article stated statistics that 724,000 personal computers were sold in 1980 and that 1982 was going to more than double that amount. Time was right in that respect, but it could be said that as enthusiastic as the article was, it still underestimated just how huge computers would be.</p>
<p>Time downplayed the significance of computers for video gaming but was accurate in its position on how computers would change the modern office setting. It’s safe to say no one really knew where the computer would take us in 1982, but most were certain it would change the way in which most things operated. That same year was the year the Commodore 64 came out, which was regarded by many as one of the most important devices in gaming and sound to appear up to that point.</p>
<p>The real import of Time’s endowment to the computer is that it happened at all and when it did. 1982 was the moment when the sea change happening in the virtual world surfaced to the public. By the year 2000, nearly 60 percent of the population in the United States owned a personal computer. Not even Time could predict that fact.</p>

<p>The Linux operating system is a free cloned version of the much older Unix operating system. Unix was created in 1969; it wasn’t until 1991 that a University of Helsinki student named Linus Torvalds invented Linux. The key difference between Linux and other operating systems is the model is completely open source. That is, the public is able to change the programming code of Linux for personal use.</p>
<p>Origins of Linux</p>
<p>Torvalds used an operating system much like Unix, Minix, before he decided to develop his own kernel for the original OS. In operating systems, the kernel is the main component. It manages the operating system and allows for use of applications. When he had created the kernal, which he called Linux, he added it to a free, burgeoning operating system called GNU that was missing a kernal. Linux is unique in that Torvalds posted his combination of GNU and his kernal online and volunteers added improvements to it.</p>
<p>Linux as a Community</p>
<p>The idea of open-sourcing an operating system had not been tried before Torvalds created Linux. Early after its release, and in addition to the few in the beginning who added improvements, many more programmers began debugging and developing Linux on the Internet. A community of Linux users quickly formed. As Linux is a free operating system, those who use it tend to be the ones who send in suggestions for improvements.</p>
<p>Those who use Linux tend to love it, but its users are mostly programmers and industry folk. Nevertheless, they champion Linux above all others. The competition between Microsoft and Linux is fairly minimal. Although Linux is free, it’s not as widely regarded by those outside the industry as better. In fact, it seems more of a taste preference than a performance one, although it’s true that many would disagree with such a claim.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Columbia supercomputer once was the second fastest computer in the world. It achieved that ranking in 2004 by the TOP500 project, but since that time it has dropped to 13 and then 25 in 2007 and 2008, respectively. Despite the depreciating rank, Columbia still is one of the fastest computers in the world. In addition to being alarmingly quick, its purpose for being built is rather engaging.</p>
<p>Columbia, named after the fallen crew of the space shuttle Columbia, was built for NASA in 2004. It was conceived of and assembled in only four months with the help and dedicated hands of both the government and private companies. The breakneck construction time proved to many that NASA and the United States is able to remain leaders in technology. It is stationed at the NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett, California and was constructed to simulate how the formation of elliptical galaxies. Spiral galaxies must collide in order for elliptical galaxies to emerge, and Columbia was fast and powerful enough to duplicate the process virtually. Columbia is also used for more general physics-based simulations and calculations.</p>
<p>The sheer size of the 10,240-processor supercomputer in the research center is compelling enough, but even more fascinating is what is working inside the supercomputer. The following are some of the elements that give Columbia its power:</p>
<p>— 20 SGI Altix 3000 nodes that use a version of the Linux operating system. Each node has 512 Intel processors.<br />
— 20 terabytes of memory<br />
— 440 terabytes of storage</p>
<p>After its installation and initial use, Columbia increased NASA’s overall computing power by 10 times. Columbia put the United States back in the game in terms of technology. Even though Columbia is no longer close to being the fastest in the world, it continues to be used by NASA and has the capability to impact the field science and engineering further.</p>

<p>In Santa Clara County, located just 45 miles below San Francisco, sits the 10-mile wide Silicon Valley. The history of this high-tech town begins with Stanford University and one of its professors and former students, Frederick Terman. Stanford administrators brought Terman in from MIT to help boost the school&#8217;s prominence with the addition of East Coast faculty, a move that proved monumental for the future of the area.</p>
<p>Terman was also tasked with finding a solution to alleviate some of the financial woes Stanford incurred after World War II. Terman&#8217;s scheme was to lease some of Stanford&#8217;s land to technology companies in what he called the Stanford Industrial Park. This park, established in 1954, was the beginning of what&#8217;s known as Silicon Valley today. An important supplement to leasing land was Terman&#8217;s encouragement for students to begin their own companies in the park as well. But there was one condition: high-tech companies only!</p>
<p>Soon after the park was formed, companies began filing in. The first, Varian Associates, built military radar parts. Others, such as Hewlett Packard, went on to great success after setting up shop in the park.</p>
<p>But why is the area called Silicon Valley? Who came up with the name? Businessman Ralph Vaerst coined Silicon Valley as the name for the Stanford Industrial Park and the land surrounding it. The term was printed in articles starting in 1971. The reason the Santa Clara Valley is referred to as &#8220;silicon&#8221; is due to the number of companies there that worked with semiconductors, which are made with silicon, as well as the growing number of computer companies. The computer boom, in many ways, has Terman to thank.</p>
<p>Silicon Valley remains a hotbed of innovation. Some of the companies currently located in the valley include the following:</p>
<p>Apple<br />
Google<br />
Cisco<br />
Intel<br />
HP<br />
Yahoo!<br />
Pixar<br />
Mozilla</p>

<p>It&#8217;s no longer standard for computers to include a floppy disk drive. This, for most users, renders the use of the floppy disk obsolete. But the memory device with a peculiar name has a long and storied narrative within the history of computers. As a memory storage instrument, the floppy disk could be used to transfer data between computers, serve as backup and store a computer&#8217;s operating system. Often a number of disks were used for varying purposes, as they were not able to hold a substantial amount of information. There were five main iterations of the floppy disk:</p>
<p>1. 8-inch: The first of the floppies was developed by IBM in 1967 with the ability to hold 80 kilobytes. It had a few issues in the beginning, and it wasn&#8217;t until 1971 that the 8-inch floppy was available for the general public. Its functions were limited — it could only read and load data — until Memorex created the first floppy that could both read and write.</p>
<p>2. 5 1/4-inch: In 1976, it was decided that eight inches was too large for optimal usage. The 5 1/4-inch quickly became popular. There were two choices for the smaller disk: hard and soft. But it wasn&#8217;t long before the soft won out.</p>
<p>3. Twiggy: Apple launched a 5 1/4-inch disk for its Macintosh computers, but the format did not last.</p>
<p>4. 3-inch: As many had with the 8-inch disk, people began to complain that the 5 1/4-inch disk was too large. The 3-inch disks, generated in the early 1980s, were encased in a hard material to protect the data. The 3-inch disks did not hold any more information than its immediate predecessor, however.</p>
<p>5. 3 1/2-inch: Introduced by Sony, these disks were the most reliable and easy to use of all the formats. This specimen went through iterations of its own but was replaced with the compact disk in the early 1990s.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Photosynthesis is a process wherein plants take energy from the sun in order to convert carbon dioxide in the air into food. So what the heck does photosynthesis have to do with computers? Enter Luis Luna’s “O” Project. Inspired by the natural process of photosynthesis, industrial designer Luna fashioned an idea for a sustainable personal computer that would help offset the carbon dioxide exhausted by the manufacturing of computers. Less about actually reducing carbon dioxide emissions than raising awareness about its harm, the “O” Project is one of the first steps toward a greener world. The following bullets are some of the aspects of the project:</p>
<p>Round shape with a place to grow a plant inside<br />
Biodegradable skin made of bamboo and cornstarch polymers<br />
Completely recyclable components with the ability to turn into a flowerpot<br />
Visually pleasing design, constructed to block out the unpleasant facet of computer noise pollution</p>
<p>Dell has had ideas for more sustainable computers in the past. The Studio Hybrid computer already claims a “green” attitude without sacrificing style. Its design is smaller and declares itself more efficient than most computer models. Luna took the idea of the Studio Hybrid and exaggerated it. There&#8217;s no doubt the design is captivating, but it raises questions of style over substance. While the “O” Project is clearly innovative, it may take more than just he ability to grow flora within the apparatus to counterbalance the incredible amount of energy and carbon dioxide drained in the creation of such products.</p>
<p>Ultimately, the project is just a concept for now. Luna designed&#8221;O for Dell&#8217;s green computer contest, but there is currently no sign that Dell plans to manufacture the machine any time soon. Despite its possible flaws and misguiding, companies are realizing the importance of considering greener options in all fields, and computers are no exception.</p>

<p>Steve Jobs, the 42nd richest man in America, co-founder and CEO of Apple Computers, is a college dropout. If he had not stopped attending Reed College in 1972, though, it&#8217;s hard to say he&#8217;d have become the same innovator that he did. Jobs&#8217; biography includes tales of eccentricity, cleverness, brilliance and, of course, controversy.</p>
<p>Life Before Apple</p>
<p>Jobs was born in 1955 and grew up in Mountain View, California. After dropping out of Reed College, he moved home and began attending a computer club with eventual co-found of Apple Steve Wozniak. During that time, Jobs worked at Atari, setting aside money for an illuminating trip to India with a college friend. Jobs returned a Buddhist and full of ideas for creating a personal computer. Jobs wasn&#8217;t a good computer engineer, but he knew Wozniak was, so he enticed him to aid him in creating a company.</p>
<p>Company Startup</p>
<p>Apple was founded in a garage in 1976. Together, Jobs and Wozniak developed the Apple I. It sold for $666.66. The following year, the Apple II was introduced, changing the market for computers entirely. Once Apple began to thrive, and throughout his time as director, Jobs was characterized by his employees as somewhat testy and easily irritated. He stepped down as chairman in 1985 and began work on a new venture.</p>
<p>Jobs&#8217; &#8220;Next&#8221; Steps</p>
<p>Jobs started a company called NeXT Computer, but it didn&#8217;t pan out as he expected. Jobs bought the company that would later be known as Pixar in 1986, which proved to be a very lucrative move. In 1996, Apple purchased NeXT and Jobs returned to the company. Since then he has created the hugely successful iPod and iTunes Store, followed by the equally successful iPhone and iPad. Many have criticized him for his lack of charity and his sizable ego. As the CEO of Apple today, he makes $1 a year.</p>

<p>When you want to select something on a computer screen, you hardly even think about moving the mouse around and clicking &#8211; you just do it, and it just works. Somehow it has become natural to connect moving a device with your hand to the movement of a cursor elsewhere. It&#8217;s such an abstract concept, but it&#8217;s one that has become so ingrained into our everyday actions. Who invented the computer mouse, and how did it become as ubiquitous as it is?</p>
<p>The mouse was invented fairly early in the history of computers. It was an inventor at the Stanford Research Institute named Douglas Engelbart who, in 1963, first came up with the design. He developed other mouse-like devices, some of which were attached to the user&#8217;s head, but the original hand mouse proved to be the easiest to operate. The first mouse was just a box with two wheels and electronics inside. Xerox was the first company to include a mouse with its computers. This particular pairing did not make the mouse popular &#8211; that credit belongs to the Apple Macintosh.</p>
<p>Even after the Macintosh, the growth of the pointing instrument was slow. As time went on, more and more computers were coming packaged with a mouse, but most computers were built so that the use of a mouse wasn&#8217;t needed. By the 1990s, most computers came with mice, and the look of the mice varied. There were one-button mice, two-button mice and even three-button mice. But by the mid-1990s, the two-button mouse was claiming victory.</p>
<p>Innovation within mouse technology includes the invention of optical mice (mice without wheels or balls) and 3-D mice. These days, most people using a desktop computer, and even some who utilize laptops, use a mouse. It would be very difficult to manage a computer without one, as most applications, such as the Internet, require a great deal of clicking.</p>

<p>Apple Computers, currently Apple Inc., has been a successful company for many years, and while not every product has been a mega hit, every successful company has its first major triumph. For Apple, that first commercial success was the Apple II.</p>
<p>The Apple II was launched in 1977, mostly a result of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak&#8217;s designing, and it was, in many ways, very similar to its Apple I predecessor. It ran at the same speed and included the same processor as the Apple I, but the Apple II had a multitude of advancements. Included below are some of the Apple II&#8217;s features:<br />
A keyboard within the case<br />
A color display<br />
BASIC programming language already incorporated<br />
Eight slots for expansion on the motherboard<br />
Ability to hold as much as 48 kilobytes of memory</p>
<p>Despite its assorted similarities to its ancestor, the Apple II became the prototype for the user-friendly design and interface. Not only was it one of the first profitable personal computer, it allowed users to personalize and expand the computer to their own liking and needs. Access to the motherboard involved simply taking the top off the case, and Apple made a number of additional expansion cards to sweeten the deal even more. For example, users could add a floppy disk card, video cards and could even upgrade the processor fairly easily.</p>
<p>The Apple II was improved throughout the years by subsequent models. Some of these models include the Apple II Plus in 1979, the Apple IIe in 1983, the Apple IIc in 1984, the Apple IIgs in 1986 and the Apple IIc Plus in 1988. The Apple II series was discontinued in the early 1990s. It had proven to be Apple&#8217;s breadwinner for many years and was the factor that launched the company into what it is today.</p>

<p>Even if you don&#8217;t know exactly what it is, you know something with the name &#8220;computer virus&#8221; can&#8217;t be a good thing. A computer virus is a program that, when in contact with a computer, contaminates that computer by attacking its components. Usually these viruses spread from computer to computer, and the user often is unaware of the infection. Although many might think of computer viruses as a more modern hassle, the aggravating intruder has existed nearly since the start of computer technology.</p>
<p>In 1971, a researcher at BBN Technologies wrote a program that would reproduce itself. Called &#8220;Creeper&#8221; the experimental virus was spotted on ARPANET, infecting the computers connected. The first computer virus to attack outside a laboratory setting was &#8220;Elk Cloner.&#8221; It was 1982, and the creator was a high school student named Richard Skrenta. The first virus on a personal computer was the (c)Brain in 1986.</p>
<p>The &#8220;Creeper&#8221; virus was implanted through use of a floppy disk, which became a common way for viruses to spread before the Internet was popular. It was normal activity to share information with others on floppies, but once infected, a floppy disk could become a carrier of the virus, spreading it to each computer it contacted.</p>
<p>As the Internet became more predominant, viruses were able to contaminate through links that send the user to download the infection on a website or even sit dormant in favored websites. Macro viruses gained prevalence in the 1990s. Macro viruses use software programs such as Microsoft Word to hide, running and spreading when the applications are opened.</p>
<p>Luckily there is anti-virus software available, and most users take advantage of the option. Although the software does not detect everything, if used correctly and updated often, the risk of becoming infected by a computer virus lessons dramatically. Despite all efforts to terminate them, viruses have a long history with computers and probably will exist as long as they have a host.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>At about the size of a suitcase and for the price of $1795, the 23-and-a-half pound portable Osborne 1 hit the 1981 market with a splash. The Osborne Computer Corporation only produced the machine for two years, but this first successful mobile microcomputer set the tone for the future of smaller, more convenient computers.</p>
<p>Created by Adam Osborne, the Osborne 1 was meant to be uncomplicated computer that didn’t break the bank. For early computers with as many add-ons and pre-packaged elements, $1795 was quite affordable. By September of the first year, the company had made more than $1 million and began looking at updated versions of the product.</p>
<p>The Osborne 1 had several enticing features, including a huge amount of free software. The following list enumerates the specifics offered:</p>
<p>CP/M 2.2 operating system<br />
64 kilobytes memory<br />
spreadsheet and word processing applications<br />
MBASIC and CBASIC programming languages<br />
rugged and portable design<br />
optional battery pack<br />
two floppy disk drives</p>
<p>Despite the sundry of components, there were downfalls to the Osborne 1&#8242;s construction. For one, the screen was a mere 5 inches. This made for better portability, but it was not ideal for viewing. Also, the included floppy disk drives were not capable of holding enough data to sustain a number of applications.</p>
<p>But the real failure of the Osborne 1 was its marketing. Soon after it became financially rewarding, the company began to advertise its newest product, the Osborne Executive, a superior product. With the public knowing a higher quality machine was to soon follow the sale of the Osborne 1 basically collapsed. The company also announced the Osborne Vixen, and the repercussions of that were enough to bankrupt Osborne Computers. Although the Osborne 1 didn&#8217;t last, it remains the first computer made that could fit under an airplane seat.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you think about it, even processes that don&#8217;t seem digital in the slightest, such as writing a check to someone, require computers to do the heavy lifting today. Imagine how painstakingly slow it would be to process each check currently in circulation by hand. It was even slow in the 1950s, which is why the Electronic Recording Method of Accounting (ERMA) computer was invented.</p>
<p>The Stanford Research Institute pioneered the project for Bank of America in 1950, continuing until 1955. The project was effective, and at the end of it 32 ERMA machines were built. General Electric was saddled with building the machines after the project&#8217;s end, and the first was placed in 1959. ERMA made the affair of processing checks a computer function, and it also mechanically updated the accounts involved. This operation and the 32 machines proved quite profitable for Bank of America, and the bank quickly grew.</p>
<p>For ERMA machines to totally automate checking, though, it would take more than just the construction of a few dozen machines. Somehow the computer would have to read and recognize checks, and that meant figuring out the best way to mark checks so that they could be read even if damaged and would be difficult to counterfeit or alter the numbers. The solution was numbers printed with magnetic ink, which allowed the mark to both be read easily by humans and computers. The technology, called MICR, was the wind to the ERMA machines&#8217; sails.</p>
<p>The ERMA machines were phased out by the 1970s, replaced with better technology, but by the end of their reign they had left Bank of America the largest bank in the world. So while the numbers at the bottom of your checks don&#8217;t mean a whole lot to the user, they certainly mean a whole lot to the bankers who are no longer tasked with attending to every check individually.</p>

<p>The word “quantum” is intimidating. It represents something you&#8217;d be lucky to fully understand after years of research and study. Quantum is scientific; it&#8217;s mathematical; it&#8217;s overwhelming. But as computer power continues to surge, duplicating nearly every year and a half, quantum computers are becoming less a science fiction fantasy and much closer to reality. Current technology isn&#8217;t able to handle the decreasing size and increasing speed computers demand. Once computer transistors reduce to the size of atoms, quantum computing has to take over.</p>
<p>Quantum computing would require a new kind of transistor. This transistor, called a qubit, would be able to execute a number of tasks concurrently while the transistors of current technology can only engage in one chore at a time. This, obviously, speeds up the action of computing drastically. As we won’t likely reach the point where quantum computers are needed for another 10 to 20 years, it’s hard to say what they would be used for, but there’s no doubt as to their rapidity in computing.</p>
<p>Research is under way at IBM, Yale and UCSB on quantum computing, but the assignment is difficult even for computer scientists. Quantum qubits are finicky. As soon as they are observed, the act can minimize the bit&#8217;s potential for computing. The researchers have come up with a way of entangling the particles to lesson the chance of computing loss, but the process is formidable.</p>
<p>Although quantum computers don&#8217;t currently exist in the marketplace, the company D-Wave Systems has built one that can perform small pattern tasks. It will be some time still before we understand the inner-workings of qubits in order to utilize them in a workable way, but scientists are busy figuring it out. As soon as the first quantum computer hits the market, though, it can be expected that others will follow with further innovation, as that is the nature of commercial technology.</p>

<p>When the Osborne 1 launched in 1981, it became the first portable computer to gain success in the marketplace. People loved it because it was affordable, it came with a handle and it was relatively light. Just a year later, though, the GRiD Compass 1101 was introduced. At $8150 it was no bargain, but it was miles ahead of the Osborne 1 technology-wise, and it weighed a mere 11 pounds. Many consider the GRiD Compass 1101 the first laptop.</p>
<p>Specifications aside, the GRiD Compass and the Osborne 1 had differences. The Osborne 1 was a very commercial product, appealing to the everyday consumer. The GRiD Compass, on the other hand, was mainly sold to the U.S. government. It came equipped on the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1985, and the military used it as well.</p>
<p>The GRiD Compass was tremendously high-tech for the time. Some of the standard features on the machine include the following:</p>
<p>6-inch ELD display<br />
Intel 8086 processor<br />
340 kilobytes of bubble memory<br />
Multiple-connection port<br />
Unique Grid operating system<br />
Black magnesium-alloy closing case<br />
256 kilobyte DRAM</p>
<p>Its steep price made it the most expensive personal computer you could own, which is why most civilians didn&#8217;t own it. The computer wasn&#8217;t unsuccessful, however, in terms of historical value. It was too advanced for a normal consumer, and it lacked features like a common operating system and an affordable price, to ever become popular. But it wasn&#8217;t trying to be the Osborne 1.</p>
<p>The GRiD Compass 1101 was the first personal computer to feature the clamshell design, which would later become the standard design for modern laptops. The difference between the Compass and other laptop-like designs was the Compass wasn&#8217;t attempting to become a portable computer for everyday folk. The Osborne 1 opened that particular market, but the GRiD Compass helped pave the way for the future.</p>

<p>A computer’s microprocessor does most of the heavy lifting in terms of allotting power. Also known as the central processing unit (CPU), the microprocessor is the brain of the machine. The three principal operations of the microprocessor are to read and write RAM, comprehend tasks and perform them, and tell all the other parts of the computer what to do and when. The microprocessor is the computer’s system of organization.</p>
<p>The Intel 4004 was released in 1971 and is regarded as the first microprocessor made on a single chip. The project that resulted in the Intel 4004 began in 1969 when a calculator manufacturer in Japan contracted Intel to construct a chipset for high-tech calculators. The main Japanese designer had an idea for a series of seven chips, but the Intel designers, and especially Federico Faggin, pared it down and ended up creating the 4004.</p>
<p>The Intel 4004 was revolutionary. This first microprocessor included all of the fundamentals found in the microprocessors today. Some of these fundamentals include the following elements that the Intel 4004 had:</p>
<p>108 kHz clock speed<br />
2,300 transistors<br />
8-bit instructions, 4-bit data processing<br />
direct 1Kb of program memory, 4Kb of data memory<br />
46 instructions, leading to 92,000 per second</p>
<p>Although it was the first microprocessor and it was fast for its time, it wasn’t fast enough to run a computer. It fit well into calculators and other small gadgets, but it was relatively weak. It also had its problems. The structure limited the power, and if the information was interrupted, there was no re-routing available. The manner in which RAM was reached was ineffective as well.</p>
<p>Despite its imperfections, it was a very progressive invention. Among computer history collectors today, an original Intel 4004 can go for a good sum of money. The demand for smaller and faster computers is pervasive, and the first microprocessor was an important step in creating that market appetite.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the oldest fathers of the computer, Charles Babbage, died before the 20th century began. How is it possible that a man who lived in the 19th century could have had an impact on the modern computer? In short, Babbage was no ordinary man. He studied mathematics in school, but he was also a philosopher, a scientist and, most importantly, he devised the earliest notion of a programmable computer.</p>
<p>He had worked with logarithmic tables and calculating devices, but Babbage wanted to find a way these tools could function mechanically. Not only would mechanical math tables work more quickly than humans, they would lesson the possibility for human error. His sentiments on the subject were documented in a letter written in 1822 to Sir Humphrey Davy.</p>
<p>That same year, Babbage submitted a paper to the Royal Astronomical Society. The paper introduced his idea of the difference engine, which allowed for values to be calculated mechanically. He was granted government money to develop the engine, but Babbage was unable to complete the project due to the death of his father and one of his sons.</p>
<p>With his difference engine essentially a failure, Babbage started work on his new idea: the analytical engine. Unlike the difference engine, this machine would be complex and programmable. He worked on the analytical engine for nine years starting in 1833, although it was never fully built during Babbage’s lifetime. Although it wasn’t fully constructed, there was no dearth of blueprints of the analytical engine.</p>
<p>Despite never actually seeing his concepts in action, his ideas proved to be brilliant. With the analytical engine he had outlined a mechanical device that was basically the first general-purpose computer. Babbage was very accomplished in his time as an inventor and academic, but it wasn’t until later that it was understood how innovative and before-their-time his computer concepts were.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Owning your own business is a lot of work. There is paperwork to keep track of, expenses to pay, employees to keep tabs on, and much more. This is why you should do everything possible to keep yourself organized and more efficient. There are many different functions available on the Internet to do just that. Stay organized and have more time to focus on the important things in your business. It really doesn’t matter whether you are running an online business or you have a physical business, you should still be implementing tools that have been made possible because of the Internet.</p>
<p>The most important tool you should utilize is e-mail. It is faster to communicate with customers, vendors, and employees when you use e-mail. This is because it can take days for letters to arrive, and e-mails take seconds. Plus, most people check e-mail multiple times a day. Fax machines are hardly ever used anymore because it is just easier to send files as attachments than it is to send a fax.</p>
<p>Another tool your business should use on the Internet is cloud storage and <a title="Cloud computing" href="http://www.netsuite.com">cloud computing</a>. You can have your entire database online so that employees can access it remotely. This will save you money on computer networks and open the door for remote jobs, which saves office space. There are many other benefits to cloud storage, too,. It has provided a way to store data in an organized and paper-free manner. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s 1956. Imagine a room wherein an inventor and an engineer &#8211; both also entrepreneurs &#8211; are conversing about Issac Asimov and his works of science fiction. The discussion leads to Asimov&#8217;s &#8220;Three Laws of Robotics.- Something groundbreaking was bound to happen. What did transpire from George C. Devol and Josehph F. Engelberger&#8217;s talks was the first industrial robot, Unimate.</p>
<p>Engelberger established a company, Unimation, and by 1961, Unimate began work on the assembly line at a New Jersey General Motors plant. Surprisingly, there wasn&#8217;t much hubbub surrounding the development and implementation of Unimate. The inventors and GM executives stressed that the robot was an experiment. This was because if anything were to go wrong, they wanted to mitigate possible attacks from the media.</p>
<p>But the robot worked. And it worked well. One of the reasons Unimate was so popular and successful was that it replaced laboring men who absolutely despised the tasks they were carrying out with an automated robot that could conduct the duty quickly and effortlessly. The 4,000-pound arm of Unimate automated the following tasks:</p>
<p>Die-casting machine extraction<br />
Automobile body welding</p>
<p>The most significant element of both of these engagements is they involved extremely hot pieces of steel as well as huge hunks of automobile. It was not only quicker and more effective for Unimate to execute the tasks, but it was also safer. Thus, Unimate was successful both in practice and commercially. Quite predictably, other robots began popping up in the manufacturing world. An industry of robots was born.</p>
<p>Although it took a couple years for Unimate to become profitable for GM, it ultimately did bring in money. Engelberger sold Unimation for $107 million in 1983, something he probably never dreamed of accomplishing 27 years ago in that room. And he couldn&#8217;t possibly have known that by today robots would be performing surgeries and nearly every factory task imaginable.</p>
